A Message from Dr. Kelly

Welcome to a special edition of Across the Divisions, where we're introducing a new version of Horace Mann School's academic calendar for next year, 2009-2010. In our attempt to care for our families, we're thinking ahead and hope this information will prove helpful as you plan your vacations or other special arrangements in the coming year.

The Presidential Inauguration

On Tuesday, January 20th, Horace Mann School witnessed an extraordinary chapter in American history as students, faculty and staff in all divisions gathered to watch the nation’s first African-American President take the oath of office.

Gross Theater, Sanders Recital Hall, the gyms in both Lower and Upper Division and the Nursery Division Studio were filled to capacity. Large screens and projectors gave each location a theater-like setting.

Everyone stood and some joined in singing as the Star Spangled Banner played at the closing of the inaugural ceremonies. Horace Mann once again reaffirmed the strength of our  community and a shared sense of new possibilities.

The Dark at the Top of the Stairs

The Horace Mann Theatre Company announces the first performance for 2009, William Inge’s Drama, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Directed by Department Chair, Woody Howard, Inge’s play from the late 1950’s is about how changing times and adolescent angst create tensions among members of a small-town family in the 1920’s. The play resonates remarkably with our current economic & societal crisis.

Performances will take place in the Alfred Gross Theatre at The Horace Mann School, 231 West 246th Street, Riverdale, NY, Thursday, February 5th at 4:00pm, Friday and Saturday, February 6th and 7th at 7:30pm.

Susan Garrison awarded Lyall Dean Chair in Mathematics

Horace Mann School celebrated both excellent teaching and devotion to this School by naming Middle Division math teacher Susan Garrison as the first holder of the Lyall Dean Chair in Mathematics at a reception on Monday, January 26, 2009. The Chair was endowed by alumni Regina Kulik Scully '81 and Dominic Kulik ’82 and their families, and was named in honor of former HM math teacher Lyall Dean. The endowment of this Chair by the Kulik family marked the first-ever Middle Division Chair established at Horace Mann.
