HM Hosts Workshop on the Importance of Classroom Participation

 by Cecilia Malm

Have you ever heard these words from your child’s teacher?: “Your child is a wonderful student, but I would really like to see him (or her) participate more in class.”

Why is classroom participation important? What are some of the factors that determine whether or not a student participates? And what can parents do to encourage their children to take a more active role in class discussions?

Education Consultant Leslie Talbot led a lively discussion of these questions and more in a workshop held on November 5th organized by the PA Diversity Committee, HM Office of Diversity, and RIISE (Resources in Independent School Education). As Founder and Principal of Talbot Consulting, Ms. Talbot has provided evaluation and technical assistance services to schools, school districts, nonprofit organizations, state education agencies and foundations for over a decade. She was formerly Senior Vice President and founding employee of K12connect, Inc., a privately-held education software company specializing in technology solutions for schools, as well as Director of Research & Evaluation for Teach For America (TFA).

The Horace Mann community came together to light a “Diya” and celebrate the annual Festival of Lights – Diwali. Organized by the Horace Mann South Asian Foundation (HMSAF) and supported by HM administration, faculty and staff, the event was hosted on November 15th, 2013 under the rotunda of Cohn Dining Commons which had been transformed into a magical space. The evening offered various flavors of South Asian culture and sprinkles of Diwali celebrations. While the venue was decorated with Maharaja canopies and colorful flow of traditional Sari, the exceptionally talented FLIK staff offered a wide spread of South Asian delicacies prepared in house!

“Ready, set, go!” Commanded the sixth grade boy as he and other children jumped on a pile of leaves, scrunching them down for composting. The newly picked garlic and bunches of kale lay on a nearby table.

A local farm? Dorr? No, this scene took place at the Horace Mann garden on October 19 when the newly named Greenscape Committee “put the Horace Mann garden to bed.”

Anthony Bonsignore

Anthony Bonsignore is a Kindergarten teacher at the Nursery Division. Mr. Bonsignore holds a B.A. from Gettysburg College and a B.S. from Bank Street College.

What is your favorite word?

Fun, simply because there are so many definitions of what people mean by fun, especially people of different ages. In addition to teaching at Horace Mann, I run a weekly baseball camp for kids from ages five to fifteen. When I ask a five year old, “What is fun for you in baseball?” and then I ask the same question of a fifteen year old, I get two vastly different answers, and that just pertains to baseball.

What is your least favorite word?
