Energy & Water: Implementation & Updates

We are conscious of the need to conserve energy and water and the School promotes methods to encourage efficiency in these areas. We continuously monitor energy use and develop ways of reducing consumption.

At the John Dorr Nature Lab, students flush toilets with recycled rainwater collected and held in underground cisterns.

The School participates in an energy conservation program resulting in substantial cash rebates to the School

The School is currently undertaking a large-scale conversion to LED lightbulbs and fixtures. (See the Green Alert on the Sustainability page for more information.)

The School opts for the installation of energy efficient mechanical systems when upgrades are necessary.

The School is in the process of installing hands-free faucets in all bathrooms on campus resulting in a potential savings of 500,000 gallons of water each year.

The School will be installing 40 waterless urinals this spring. Each urinal is estimated to save 40,000 gallons of water per year for a total of 1,600,000 gallons per year.

In Prettyman and Hazen Gymnasiums, the outdated energy-siphoning sky lights were replaced with energy efficient Kalwall units resulting in a heating and cooling savings to be determined.

The Lower Division has opted for pitchers of water and reusable plastic cups in place of commercially purchased bottles of water.

Horace Mann School has installed purified water coolers throughout Middle and Upper campuses to reduce the purchase of bottled water.
