Heat Related Illness

Heat related illness could involve heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. All heat related illnesses are usually are a sign of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and a rise in core body temperature. Symptoms of heat cramps include severe possibly debilitating cramps that typically begin suddenly and affect the hands, calves or feet but can affect any muscle in the body. Heat exhaustion symptoms include severe fatigue, nausea, headaches, excessive thirst, muscle aches and cramps, weakness, confusion, dizziness, slowed or weakened heartbeat and drenching sweats often accompanied by cold clammy skin. Heat exhaustion requires immediate medical attention but is usually not life threatening. Finally heat stroke which symptoms include nausea and vomiting, headache, dizziness and vertigo, hot flushed dry skin, rapid heart rate, decreased sweating, shortness of breath, decreased urination, increased core body temperature (104-106 degrees F), loss of consciousness and convulsions. HEAT STROKE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY and anyone experiencing heat stroke needs to seek medical attention immediately.

People experiencing heat related illnesses should seek shade or air-conditioned areas, rehydrate and cool core body temperature (ice, ice bath, cold towels, etc.) and seek medical attention.
