Sustainability Practices

Beginning in the fall of 2006, our Social Artists have worked with the Administration to support more consistent sustainability practices.

  • One outcome was the opening in the fall of 2008 of a more sustainable student cafeteria for the Middle and Upper Divisions, replacing one-use service ware with dishes, silverware and a dishwashing system. To inaugurate the new system, our Social Artists lead an assembly/ceremony to enhance student understanding and commitment to the new practices.
  • In the fall of 2009 the Head of School asked two Social Artists to chair a School-wide Sustainability Committee. This was the first time that a school-wide committee would be chaired by faculty members.
  • Representatives from all five Divisions including two faculty members and the Head of each Division and key school-wide Department Administrators including the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, The Director of Diversity, The Director of Facilities Management and The Director of the Food Service were also members.
  • The Committee engaged in a collaborative, painstaking research and writing process in which decisions were made by consensus. In the spring of 2010, the Board of Trustees adopted the statement as HM policy. Click here to view the Sustainability Policy.
