Center for Community Values & Action

The Center for Community Values and Action (CCVA) is a school-wide initiative, founded in 2006 to promote and strengthen the connections between ethics, education and action at Horace Mann School and in our wider communities. The Center fulfills its mission by teaching classes, engaging in community action including service-learning, developing programs, and providing resources.

Some highlights of our program:

  • The Upper Division (grades 9-12) service-learning program is based on impact, continuity and learning. Students participate in both active engagement and structured reflection activities each year.
  • The Upper Division Service-Learning Team has close to 100 students who participate for at least one Trimester each year. The Team participates in activities weekly with six sites, including 5 programs for youth and a program for Older Adults (60+).
  • Our HM 246 program brings more than 100 elementary- and middle school-aged participants from local schools and agencies to Horace Mann each week for a wide variety of student-run programs.
  • The Ethics in School and Society course, an Upper Division major elective, is run by the CCVA.  It is co-taught by the Head of School and the Director of the CCVA.

Our group of long-term community partners continues to grow, as our ongoing relationships deepen.
