HM alumni from the 1960’s and 1970’s probably recall The Forum, a student magazine that at one point was named the best political student publication in the country by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. It was in circulation from 1962 through 1977.

Its self-described mission was to be “a non-partisan supplement to The Record, published monthly from October to May by the staff of The Horace Mann Forum in co-operation with The Horace Mann Record, and devoted to the presentation of editorial and individual opinion in the fields of politics, history, and school affairs.”

In the decades since it folded, The Forum has proven to be invaluable as a primary source document for HM students and faculty. Students and teachers courses such as Contemporary United States History, Comparative Race and Ethnicity, and The Cold War have relied on The Forum’s firsthand reporting for coursework, projects, and history papers.

Unfortunately, the HM Archives is lacking copies of a large number of Forum issues from its collection of student publications. Missing are all issues from the 1964-1965 academic year through the 1969-1970 academic year, and all issues from the 1971-1972 school year to the end of the journal in 1977.
