When Pfizer Inc. and Germany's BioNTech announced on November 9, 2020, that they were one step closer to developing a COVID-19 vaccine, HM alum Dr. Mace Rothenberg '74 illuminated the public on this internationally important breakthrough.

He tweeted on the morning the news was announced:  "I am so proud of all the @pfizer and @BioNTech_Group colleagues, scientists, investigators, and volunteers who contributed to this OUTSTANDING achievement! #SuccessAchieveTogether" A video of Dr. Rothenberg explaining the careful process of developing the vaccine accompanied news stories about its recent data release.

Dr. Rothenberg is Chief Medical Officer at Pfizer, responsible for ensuring that information regarding the benefits and risks of Pfizer's products are accurate, up-to-date, and available to all stakeholders. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, he has been educating the public on SARS-CoV-2, explaining the nature of the virus, describing safety measures to stem its spread, and previewing the progress of vaccine development, through a social media and YouTube video series.

Dr. Rothenberg was appointed Pfizer's Chief Medical Officer in January 2019, after serving for 10 years as Pfizer's Chief Development Officer for Oncology. During the decade that Dr. Rothenberg led clinical development for Oncology, Pfizer received FDA approval for 11 new cancer medicines. In recognition of this work, the alum was named recipient of the first Craig A. Saxton Lifetime Achievement Award by Pfizer in October 2018.
