During a senior grade meeting, Emily was intrigued when the Alumni Office presented the offerings that were available through the HM Summer Internship Program. Although Emily is attending Yale University, with an intention to study global affairs as a pre-law student, she was interested in pursuing an internship that incorporated her broader interests of policy and film, since she loved those classes at HM. She spent the summer as a production assistant for CNN’s segment “Champions for Change,” which spotlights inspiring trailblazers and explores their motivations and impact. In the first month, Emily met twice a week with a CNN production team to select their champion, organize shoot dates, design interview questions, and outline scripts and camera shots to amplify the story they crafted. Next, Emily traveled to various shot locations and observed the interviews of those who would appear in the segment before following along the editing process, where the team discussed which clips, b-roll, and music to use. From this internship, Emily learned how every detail counts in journalism—from the camera setup to the lighting of the shot. Although she never previously considered a career in journalism, Emily would encourage future HM students and alumni to explore career paths that they might not have explored yet through the HM Summer Internship Program, just as she did.
