Horace Mann School Appoints New Director of Athletics, Health & Physical Education

With Robert Annunziata preparing for retirement after 35 years of exceptional service to Horace Mann School, Head of School Tom Kelly shared news with the community that he has asked Matthew Russo to serve as HM’s next Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education, effective July 1, 2023. With his appointment, Matthew will join other senior administrators as a member of the School’s Administrative Council.

As the Director, Mr. Russo will assume primary responsibility for HM's Nursery through 12th Grade physical education program, including aquatics, and one of the largest 7th through 12th Grade athletic programs on the East Coast. In addition, Mr. Russo will coordinate HM's ongoing efforts to improve existing initiatives and implement novel approaches within its health and wellness programs for students and employees.

Mr. Russo came to Horace Mann School in September of 2004 as a Middle and Upper Division Physical Education teacher. In addition to his traditional teaching responsibilities, he has

coached and advised at the Middle and Upper Division levels, provided supplemental instruction to Summer on the Hill, served as an Upper Division Independent Study Advisor, worked in our summer camps, and played a critical role in developing the Upper Division’s physical education curriculum as both a teacher and Department Chair. Matthew is currently the well-regarded coach of the school’s Varsity Football Team and Varsity Baseball Team and is known for building community within a culture of mutual respect. Regionally, Mr. Russo has participated in and led a number of forums and conferences about diversity, equity and inclusion within a comprehensive athletic and physical education program.
