Renée Richards ’51 Honored by
Jewish Sports Heritage Association
Renée Richards of the Class of 1951 -- renowned ophthalmologist, transgender and human rights advocate, and tennis professional who sued the United States Tennis Association and won the right to compete as a woman – was inducted into the Jewish Sports Heritage Association on May 1st at Temple Israel of Lawrence, NY. The Jewish Sports Heritage Association (JSHA) is a not-for-profit education organization whose mission is to educate the public about the role Jewish men and women have played, and continue to play, in the world of sports, an area of Jewish accomplishment often overlooked.
The JSHA is run by Alan Freedman '74, who founded the organization in 2015 after a 21-year career as founding director of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. "Renée Richards’s breakthrough in the 1970's is as important now as it was back then," said Dr. Doug Segan, president of Temple Israel of Lawrence, where the induction ceremony was held, "and we are very pleased and honored to be recognizing her this year."
