Remembrances
Horace Mann School remembers with fondness the following members of our community who have passed away.
Morris Dickstein, father of Jeremy Dickstein '84 and Rachel Dickstein '88, and grandfather of Evan Dickstein '17 and Adam Dickstein '22, passed away on March 24, 2021.
Michael Etra ’43 died peacefully on March 21, 2022, at the age of 95.
Frank Gilbert ’48 passed away on May 16, 2022. His wife, Ann, shared: “He was 91 and lived a full life. Certainly we live in a more beautiful world because of Frank’s important work in historic preservation. He was a pioneer in this field and was so pleased with his role in helping save Grand Central Station. As a lawyer working for the City of New York in the early ‘60s, he helped draft the legislation that established the New York City Landmarks Commission. Herbert Heller ‘47 passed away on March 5, 2022.
Ed Richard ’54 shared that his classmate and close friend for 70 years, Jon Kliegman '54, passed away in February of 2021.
William K. Langfan, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, passed away on April 14, 2022. Bill is the father of Mark Langfan ’78 and Dayna Langfan ‘79, and the grandfather of David Heller ’11, Bennett Heller ’13, and Justin Langfan ’14. In 2002, Bill and his late wife Marion founded Horace Mann School’s annual constitutional oratorical competition for tenth-graders, the Langfan Constitutional Oratorical Competition, which challenges students to research, write, and present speeches on constitutional issues.
David Mandelbaum ‘50 passed away on February 5, 2022.
Edward Marx ’45 passed away on May 22, 2014.
Eric McGregor ’00 passed away on April 26, 2022.
D. Paul Rittmaster, father of Peter Rittmaster ’83 and Steve Rittmaster ’85 and grandfather of Davis Rittmaster ’15, Michael Rittmaster ’16, and Lucy Rittmaster ’19, passed away on April 7, 2022.
James Slater ‘40 died on February 17, 2022, at age 97.
John Weiss ’51 passed away on April 19, 2022.
