Matt Mark ’90 Named Chair of the Board of Trustees

On September 26, 2024, the Horace Mann School Board of Trustees elected Matthew Mark ’90 as the school’s next Chair, effective immediately. This follows Larry Grafstein’s announcement earlier this year that he would be stepping down as Chair, a position he had held since 2019. In this new role, Matt will work closely alongside Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly to ensure the ongoing excellence of all aspects of life at Horace Mann School.

Matt is an alumnus of the Class of 1990 and he and his wife, Cindy, are parents to two HM graduates, Alexa ’20 and Amanda ’22, and one current student, son Andrew ’25. He is also a longtime board member, having first been elected during the 2009-2010 school year. Since then, Matt has served in various leadership roles including Vice Chair from 2018 – 2024, Treasurer from 2015 -2018, and Secretary from 2013-2015. Along with his work as a member of the Executive Committee, he has been co-chair of the board’s Investment Committee, Committee on Trustees and Governance, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. “In my time as a trustee, I have had the privilege of serving in nearly every role and spending time with nearly every other trustee.  The decision to step into the chair position was a natural progression for me and for our Board,” said Mark.

When asked to comment on his thoughts for the future, Mark said, “Horace Mann is operating well, led by a faculty and administrative team whose performance has been exceptional for many years. Our Board’s role is to support them and help Tom and his team plan strategically for the future. We have been engaged in a strategic review process for the past year, and we will conclude that process during this school year. You will be hearing more about our thinking as that process concludes.”

The Horace Mann School community is delighted to welcome Matt into this role and knows he will continue supporting the school with the same level of enthusiasm he has for so many years.
