Alumni Invited to Participate in Book Day 2023
After a three-year hiatus caused by the 2020 pandemic, Book Day will return to Horace Mann School on April 19, 2023! Book Day, founded in 1995, is a day when the entire Upper Division community — students, faculty, alumni, and parents — reads the same book and dedicates an entire school day to reflecting on the themes, ideas, and spirit of the work. All classes for students and faculty are cancelled and replaced by a full day of presentations, interdisciplinary workshops, discussions, art and theater exhibitions, and other activities.
The 2023 Book Day selection is Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. Selected by a committee of faculty, staff, and students, the book is a collection of science fiction/fantasy short stories that focus on beauty, religion, artificial intelligence, ethics, mathematics, art, psychology, and communication, among other topics. Several of the stories in the book received the Nebula Award, and one of the stories was the basis for the acclaimed 2017 film Arrival. Mr. Chiang is one of the present day’s most celebrated science fiction authors.
HM is seeking alumni from the following professional fields to participate in Book Day 2023:
- Technology/Artificial Intelligence
- Science Fiction (books, television, movies, etc.)
- Film Production
- Academia (linguistics, ethics, religion, mathematics, neuroscience, to name a few)
- Faith-based professions
After reading the book, if you are interested in participating or would like to know more, please contact one of our Book Day Chairs:
- Susannah Goldstein, Upper Division Librarian: susannah_goldstein@horacemann.org
- Susan Groppi, history faculty member and Grade Nine Dean: susan_groppi@horacemann.org
We hope to see you on April 19th!
