Beginning with the 2027–28 academic year, Horace Mann School is proud to offer the Ingenio Non Censio Scholars Program, an unprecedented tuition and non-tuition support program for all eligible students from families earning less than $150,000. Families will have zero costs for tuition, lunch, books, transportation, summer programs, and more.

Since its founding in 1887, Horace Mann School has been dedicated to preparing a diverse community of students to lead great and giving lives. Central to that mission is our commitment to making an HM education accessible to all qualified students, regardless of financial circumstance. Ingenio Non Censio Scholarships will provide families earning less than $150,000 and without significant assets with comprehensive support to ensure the enrolled student can fully participate in all aspects of life at HM. The program continues our ongoing efforts to step in and step up for families when financial circumstances demand our care and leadership.

What is the Meaning of Ingenio Non Censio?

The name of the program, Ingenio Non Censio, is a Latin phrase that translates to "by talent, not by wealth," a fitting reflection of the program's core philosophy to make a Horace Mann School education accessible to every qualified student.

"Talent and character have never been limited by circumstance, and neither should a Horace Mann School education," said Dr. Tom Kelly, Head of School. "Students admitted through this program will be known as Ingenio Non Censio Scholars—by talent, not by wealth—a name that captures both their promise and our conviction that the doors of this school should open to every student prepared to walk through them."

Our Longstanding Commitment to Access

The Ingenio Non Censio Scholars Program builds on HM's strong history of supporting students who could not otherwise attend. In the 2026-27 academic year, 17.5% of students received more than $19,500,000 in financial aid for tuition and other school-related costs.

Families who may not qualify for the Ingenio Non Censio Scholars Program can still apply for and may be awarded financial aid at any grade level, Nursery Threes through Twelfth Grade, with awards ranging from $2,000 to full tuition. Applying for financial aid has no impact on admission decisions, so we encourage interested prospective families to apply.
