Ensuring the affordability of a Horace Mann School education is in keeping with our mission to prepare a diverse community of students to lead great and giving lives. Our tuition model supports critical aspects of life at the school.

Tuition

For the 2026-2027 academic year, tuition is $68,700 for Threes Program (full day) through Twelfth Grade and $49,350 for Threes Program (morning or afternoon half days). Tuition dollars support an exceptional student learning experience, specialized services, and community-wide programming, including:

Faculty salaries and benefits
Teaching materials and supplies
Trips and activities (e.g. overnight programming at John Dorr Nature Laboratory and community-wide events like Homecoming)

Equipment used in classes
Technology
Maintenance
Campus operating expenses
Financial aid and other forms of student support

Financial Aid

Horace Mann School has a strong commitment to providing financial aid to students who could not otherwise attend. For the 2025-2026 academic year, 17% of students receive more than $18,000,000 in financial aid for tuition and other school-related costs. All financial aid is based on need; no merit scholarships are awarded. Financial aid is available to qualifying students at any grade level at HM, Nursery Threes through Twelfth Grade. Awards vary and ranged from $2,000 to full tuition for the 2025-26 school year. Families do need to reapply for financial aid each year. However, when a family receives financial aid at HM, the school will endeavor to continue to provide aid at a commensurate level so long as the family financial situation does not change.

Applying for Financial Aid

Horace Mann School's belief is that all families should engage fully in the life of Horace Mann School and contribute meaningfully to our community. While the school does provide full (100%) financial assistance to some families, most families are expected to make a financial contribution toward their child’s education as a demonstration that tuition is a priority.

As part of the financial aid review process, the school will carefully consider each family’s unique financial situation, including income, assets, number of dependents, discretionary spending choices, and unusual circumstances for custodial and non-custodial parents/guardians. If the school determines that a family's choices do not reflect a commitment to making Horace Mann School a financial priority, it reserves the right to decline consideration of an application for financial aid or to reduce an award that might otherwise be offered.

Admission to Horace Mann School is need-blind. Applicants are evaluated without regard to a request for financial aid. However, because the School often admits more students who qualify for financial assistance than available resources can support, not all admitted students who qualify for aid are able to receive it. For students offered admission, financial aid decisions—contingent upon the completion of a financial aid application by custodial and non-custodial parents/guardians—are communicated at the time of the admission offer.

Tuition FAQ

What other costs can be expected?

The tuition charge does not include an Enrollment Fee of $100, Parent Association Dues of $85, an Activity Fee of $125, a Facility Improvement fee of $950 for Nursery and Lower Division students and $1,150 for Middle and Upper Division Students, Middle Division Students Book Fee of $325, lunch fees, and some student technology devices. Transportation costs are additional for all students, and HM does offer optional tuition refund insurance.

When students take a trip during the school day, the costs are included. However, if students participate in special trips, for example, travels during the spring/summer break with world language classes or clubs, those costs are additional. Some athletic equipment and supplies are included; team coaches can provide specific information. Private music lessons are available at the Middle and Upper Divisions for an additional cost.

Please note that Horace Mann School also offers the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) for enrolled students, which was created to allow every Horace Mann School student an opportunity to excel within the school community and beyond. The SAF is not restricted to students who receive Financial Aid; we recognize that tuition is a significant expense, and the cost of additional activities beyond tuition may be more than a family can manage even if they do not apply for or qualify for Financial Aid. The SAF serves as a resource to supplement other sources of funding available to students. Any cost directly related to Horace Mann School and not included in the financial aid budget may be considered by the SAF. Only enrolled students may apply for the SAF.

Will we be asked to contribute to Horace Mann School?

Yes. The tuition costs do not cover the entire expense of educating students at HM. The Annual Fund is the school’s yearly campaign to raise funds in support of the daily operations budget. Contributions from trustees, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, members of the faculty and staff, and other friends of the school help to close the gap that exists between tuition and the actual cost of a Horace Mann education. Each year we set a goal for the Annual Fund of 100% parent participation. While leadership gifts are important for the school’s economic strength, every gift does matter and every gift does make a difference. Strong financial support of the Annual Fund demonstrates the donor’s understanding and commitment to the school. Annual Fund gifts range in size from $5 to $50,000. We expect that each person will participate at a level appropriate for his or her circumstances.

Parents are also encouraged to donate their time to the School by participating in School and Parents' Association activities.

What about next year? Will the tuition increase? How much?

Each year, the Horace Mann School Board of Trustees meets and sets the tuition figures for the following year. They make this decision based on estimated costs and expenses. In recent years, the annual tuition increase has been between 4% and 6%. Families who receive Financial Aid typically receive additional funding to help cover a portion of this increase. The trustees and administration work hard to minimize tuition increases while striving to maintain the overall quality and integrity of the programs we offer.
