Applying to Nursery & Kindergarten

The Horace Mann School Nursery Division is located on Manhattan's Upper East Side and was originally the carriage house of the Andrew Carnegie estate. Each year, approximately 144 children come from neighboring areas to attend the Nursery Division for Threes, Pre-Kindergarten, and three of our Kindergarten classes. The building houses nine classrooms, a library, a nurse's office, and two outdoor play areas. For many children and families, the Nursery Division is the first taste of what Horace Mann School has to offer.

There are two Kindergarten classes at our Lower Division campus in the Bronx, which welcomes approximately 460 children for Kindergarten through Grade 5. The Lower Division campus occupies the site of the former Barnard School, and the main building houses classrooms, the library, gymnasium, cafeteria, arts and technology center, music room, music annex, nurse's office, modern language classrooms, literacy center, math center, science center, and administrative offices. Outdoor facilities include the "Grasshopper" field (a synthetic play surface), large playground, Butterfly Hill, and the O'Neill Arboretum. The Kindergarten sections are housed in freestanding "cottages" next to the main building.

Following the completion of kindergarten at either the Nursery Division or Lower Division, students continue to first grade at the Lower Division campus. Once a child is admitted to Horace Mann School, they do not need to re-apply from one year to the next.

Nursery Division and Lower Division Educational Experience

An early childhood education at Horace Mann School focuses on the child as an active, competent learner and recognizes the family’s important role in supporting this vision. The daily life in school is rich in experiences that draw on the children’s abilities and interests while stimulating new learning and curiosity. Attention to the growth and development of each child and family is a hallmark of the Nursery and Lower Divisions, one that forges strong relationships and supports children to make meaningful connections. An exciting part of the early childhood education program at the Nursery and Lower Divisions is our partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and the use of the RULER program.

  • Threes: Students entering our Threes program are placed into either a full-time or a part-time schedule. The application to our Threes program asks if the family has a preference between the full-time and part-time programs.
    • The full-time program runs from approximately 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
    • Children in the part-time program attend either in the morning (approximately 8:45 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.) or the afternoon (approximately 12:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.).
  • Pre-Kindergarten: All students in our Pre-Kindergarten program attend on a full-time schedule.
