Applying to Grades 1-5
The application for the 2025-2026 school year is now available via Ravenna Hub.
Families who are interested in applying to Horace Mann School should begin the process one year prior to their desired entry date.
For Grades 1-5, the number of openings varies from year to year based on attrition and we accept applications on a Wait Pool basis only. We activate applications and interview families as spaces become available.
Applicants applying from abroad or outside of the Tri-state area may request a Zoom interview. If you need to conduct your interview remotely, please contact us at 718-432-4100 or admissions@horacemann.org.
For Nursery through Grade 3, we have a strict September 1st birthday cutoff. For Grade 1, children must turn 6 by September 1st of the year they wish to enter; for Grade 2, children must turn 7 by September 1st of the year they wish to enter, etc.
Application Process:
1. Submit and pay for the application Deadline: November 15th
After submitting the online application you will be taken to a payment page. The non-refundable application fee for Grades 1-5 is $10; if we are able to activate the application, the family would then pay the remaining $50 of the application fee. This fee is discounted to $25 for families applying for Financial Aid; enter partial waiver code HMFinAid2024 when prompted in the Ravenna system.
2. Optional: Upload photograph to the application Deadline: January 15th
3. Schedule the standardized test Deadline: Test results must be received by January 15th
Grade 1:
Schedule the Admission Assessment - Required for Kindergarten & 1st Grade. Horace Mann School is working with First Look Insights. First Look Insights is an independent testing organization working in consultation with Horace Mann School and Riverdale Country School in order to provide additional information on the applicants that apply for Kindergarten and 1st Grade. While a piece of the application process, the assessment is not the only piece of the process. Grades 2-4:
Horace Mann School has partnered with ERB to provide the ISEE Primary to Horace Mann School Applicants. For information regarding the ISEE Primary please contact ERB or admissions@horacemann.org and information will be sent regarding scheduling and registration.
Grade 5:
Schedule the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) by going to the ISEE page on the ERB website.
4. Please upload your copy of your child's report card from last year for applicants applying to Grades 2-5 Deadline: Must be received by Oct 15th
Applicants applying to grades 2-5 should upload a copy of last year's report card by October 15th. You should also request an official copy of last year's report card from your child's school(s). When the report card for the current/first marking period of the 2024-2025 is available, please have your school send to us immediately. If your school has a Ravenna account, they may upload it directly. If not, they may email it to admissions@horacemann.org. If you find that your school is delayed, you may also send a copy of the first marking period to admissions@horacemann.org.
5.Request information from the child's current school Deadline: Must be received by Jan 15th
Grade 1:
Parents may submit their request online to their current school via Ravenna Hub for the school to fill out the Horace Mann Confidential Report.
Schools may submit the ISAAGNY Confidential School Report if they prefer.
Grades 2-5:
Parents should submit their request online to their child's teachers to ask for recommendations via the Ravenna Hub. Horace Mann School needs recommendation forms from the child's current academic teacher and the child's academic teacher from last year.
The Horace Mann School Transcript Request Forms are available via the Ravenna Hub. Please submit the forms to the child's current school.
6. Required: Submit a parent statement introducing your child and family to us Deadline: Must be received by January 15th
We want to get to know you, your family and your child better during the admissions process. We encourage you to introduce your child to us. In particular, we encourage you to consider how your family’s and your child’s life experiences to date have shaped who your child is, who you hope or imagine they will become, and what role or roles you hope their school will play. Submit the parent statement via the Ravenna Hub platform.
If you are applying for financial aid, you must submit the required materials by November 18th.
