Two Week Courses -- 6/26-7/7
Focus on the Figure
This course will focus on skills and strategies for drawing the human figure. We will practice gesture drawing with a live model and use photographs for reference. During these exercises we will practice line, mass, and movement to capture action and proportions. We will use a variety of drawing materials through a series of short one minute poses, building up to poses that will hold for longer durations.
The class will discuss the figure throughout art history to today, looking at artists ranging from Michelangelo and Rembrant, to Kehinde Wiley, Jordan Casteel, and Titus Kaphar. We will go on a series of field trips to museums and galleries in NYC to deepen our understanding of how different artists engage with the human form. This dialog about the figure is fundamental to art while fostering empathy for all people and identities. This class will be exciting for artists at any skill level.
This course is open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th grade students.

Street Photography NYC
In this course, students will use digital photography to explore the richly diverse cultures of New York City. An emphasis will be placed on street photography as the class will spend over a week taking pictures in different boroughs, visiting landmarks, historical blocks, and hidden gems throughout the city. This course will focus both on techniques of photographing city life and critiques of the works produced.
The class will begin with two days of foundational technical and creative instruction as well as a refresher on street safety so that students will feel competent and comfortable photographing in NYC. After every assignment, we will hold a class critique, constructively helping students improve their digital photography skills. The second half of technical acquisition will involve learning to edit volumes of photos through Adobe Lightroom and Capture One Pro. In addition, students will learn the secrets and intricate details of digital printing and photographic presentation. The summer course will culminate in a portfolio of work representing each student's creative ability to capture the diversity of NYC.
