Computer Science & Engineering

Introduction to Computer Science

This course focuses on the fundamentals of computer hardware architecture, computer programming, as well as user interface (UI) design. Students will gain a historical understanding of the evolution of computers from their inception to the present. Students will work individually to create personalized programs emphasizing core programming concepts using Java within the Processing Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The skills developed in this course will prepare students to take more advanced courses, such as intermediate programming, during their tenure at Horace Mann. Students will also explore the global impact of technology and associated ethical implications.

This course is open to all rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

Students will receive one half-credit for this course; this course fulfills the graduation requirement for Computer Science & Engineering.

This course runs full day from Monday, June 16 - Thursday, July 3, 2025, 9:00 am-3:00 pm.

Introduction to CAD with Fusion 360

This one-week introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of computer-assisted design (CAD) using Autodesk Fusion 360, perfect for beginners looking to develop foundational skills in 3D modeling and design. Students will learn how to navigate the Fusion 360 interface, create parametric models, and design 2D sketches with precision. The course emphasizes hands-on practice, guiding students through designing simple 3D parts and assemblies suitable for 3D printing or prototyping. Key topics include sketch constraints, dimensioning, extrusions, and fillets. By the end of the week, participants will complete a mini-project to apply their skills, such as designing a custom tool or functional part. No prior CAD experience is required, but basic computer proficiency is recommended. This course is ideal for aspiring engineers, product designers, or hobbyists looking to explore the exciting world of CAD.

This course is open to all rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

This course is not a credit-bearing.
