A Message From Dr. Kelly

Dear Friends,

With much appreciation, I thank you for the privilege of being a part of yet another awe-inspiring year at Horace Mann School. This month has seen celebrations across all our divisions; from the wonderful voices of our Kindergarteners to the inspiring contributions of this year's Senior class, we have much to celebrate and much to be proud of. The undeniable good cheer and camaraderie that resonates at this time of year reassures us that our core values and socially significant instructional moments continue to provide a solid foundation for the great and giving lives of the students we serve.

While it truly does take a village to care for each and every student at Horace Mann School, I would be remiss not to single out the exceptional work of our Division Heads, including Glenn Sherratt, our Director in Residence at Dorr. Mrs. Levy, Mrs. Steinthal, Mrs. Ingram, Dr. Schiller and Mr. Sherratt represent the very core of today's Horace Mann experience. Without their keen intellects and leadership, this year's thoughtful journey for our students would not have been possible.

For those of you who were unable to attend Wednesday's Upper Division Commencement Ceremony, below is the text of my opening remarks to the community.

Wishing you all a safe and happy summer,

Nursery Division

It is hard to believe that the school year is over. At the Nursery Division our children continued to explore and investigate until the very last day of school! Each child in class 3A painted a self portrait. 4C suited up for a Jackson Pollack inspired painting experience while 4A focused on dinosaurs. I enjoyed having a delicious lunch with small groups of kindergartners for the enitre month of May.

Middle Division

We have many celebratory moments to end the year in the Middle Division. Our first moment is Middle Mania, the last day in April, when we enjoy a field day with all grades to celebrate the close of our Middle Mania competitions. The weather almost always cooperates and lots of traditions have evolved around the day’s events.

Upper Division

It's the melancholy, celebratory, letting-go time of year. For seniors, graduation is a border-crossing to another part of their lives. They leave places where they've lived all their lives, and set off on new paths that will lead them to adulthood and reponsibility. They know where they've been and most of the time they've been comfortable there.

Dorr

It was another “magical” year at Dorr, beginning with the orientation programs in August and ending with Senior Dorr. During this time we had the good fortune to share time with well over a thousand students. At Senior Dorr, at the end of our weekend together, we shared with them a website we get that sends out messages each morning called Daily Good.

Office of Diversity

A year of diversity work creates many opportunities to bring people together. During the course of the year we have gathered in small and large groups for conversations, round tables, conferences, events and meetings. The spring has been as busy as the rest of the year. In April, several hundred people attended our annual Spring Family Gathering on the Lower Division Grasshopper.
