A Message From Dr. Kelly

As shared by many of us at the growing number of celebratory events this time of year brings, now is when we are asked most often, “What’s special about Horace Mann School?” Perhaps the answer to this question lies in the diversity of the hearts and minds of the 1,784 students we educate daily, or the excitement brought to our campuses by 1,385 families, or our ability to invite over 220 new students to join us each year; or perhaps it’s more about the social significance of the lives our alumni choose to live. I don’t know if these data points completely answer the question, but it’s a good start. However, if you are in search of more, all one needs to do is look toward the 391 faculty and staff who make Horace Mann School tick, a Board of Trustees committed to offering the best possible education to a vibrant community of learners, the privilege of teaching our students in well resourced classrooms, and the School’s unwavering belief that learning should be a life long adventure.

Alumni and Development Office

Congratulations to David Leonhardt ’90 who captured journalism’s highest honor –the Pulitzer Prize – for his writing on the economy in the column he writes for the New York Times. In the announcement on April 18th, the Pulitzer committee cited Leonhardt’s “graceful penetration of America’s complicated economic questions” from the federal budget deficit to health care reform. In winning the Pulitzer Prize David became the fourth former Horace Mann School Record editor-in-chief to be so recognized

Parents Association: Information, News & Events

As the school year comes to an end, I want to thank everyone who volunteered their time this year. 2010-2011 was a stellar year for the Horace Mann Parents Association, with many community building events, culminating with the All School Benefit held at Capitale, which attracted hundreds of parents, faculty and alumni.

Nursery Division

The Nursery Division is a very busy place! Our children have been engaged in a variety of physical activities from yoga to adventures in Central Park. Our part-time threes classes have had the experience of incubating chick eggs (from one child's grandmother's farm). The hatch was a huge success and we have been observing the growth and development of 16 chicks.

Lower Division

After a winter of weather related setbacks, the Lower Division finally made it to the theater to see Freckleface Strawberry. A great story, along with lively song and dance reminded us to celebrate our differences. Similar to our Rules We Live By, the message of Freckleface supports our community. Throughout the year we remind ourselves of how important it is to be good stewards of the earth.

Middle Division

As you may have read in the Horace Mann news, we had a very special event in the Middle Division last week. Four seventh grade students, James Hayman, James Savodelli, Hugh Savoldelli and Jeffrey Weiner won first place in the 7th - 9th grade division of the Toshiba Exploravision competition. Their winning invention was a system for using the wind power generated in subway tunnels to generate electricity.

Upper Division

As I was thinking about what to say to the parents of new students on orientation day, it occurred to me to invite them to come to the dance concert that evening. I had seen the concert the previous evening, and it was an amazing event. Watching our students in action and thinking about the school that stimulated them into action is probably the best orientation to Horace Mann you could get.

Dorr

The third graders spend one night at Dorr, the students make crafts and visit the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, CT. In the evening we build campfire, sing songs, make it rain and eat Dorr'mores. The fourth graders spend two nights at Dorr, and the program is focused on water. The students check the weather, explore the stream for macroinvertebrates, canoe, learn and build their own campfires and go on the famous Dorr Stream Walk. This past weekend, the Middle Division Science Club spent one night at Dorr. Their trip included a swamp exploration, rocket building and a night walk. This week we have the final fourth grade program and look forward to having the entire eighth grade at Dorr on Thursday for the second annual Eighth Grade Stewardship Day.

Values and Action

It was a celebration and a culmination. And yes, it was cold and by the end, wet. But the hundreds of participants in the Fourth Annual All-School Service-Learning Day lit up the neighborhood, with bright green shirts and a range of activities that will have a lasting effect long after the weather has been forgotten.

Office of Curriculum and
Professional Development

What happens when the art materials are put away, the last exam is graded, and the class of 2011 becomes the college class of 2015? As we know, Horace Mann is a busy summer place, with Day Camp, June Camp, Summer School, Summer on the Hill, New Faculty and Staff Orientation, and Pre-Season Athletics, but what are the teachers and staff members doing when they are not in charge of summer activities here at school?
