A Message From Dr. Kelly

To the Horace Mann Community,

With great pleasure I share with the Horace Mann School community the announcement of two new appointments at our school. Both of these appointments represent significant strides in the life of Horace Mann School. Lisa Moreira, our Director of Admissions since 1996, has been named to the position of Director of Institutional Research and Enrollment Management at Horace Mann. Jason Caldwell ’97 has accepted the position of Director of Admissions.

Parents Association: Information, News & Events

We have always been fortunate to have active parents who volunteer to be in leadership positions in the Parents Association. As we start to plan for the coming year, I would like to encourage you to look at the various openings and think about running for a leadership role in the PA. We are looking to fill many positions with varying degrees of time commitment. Please take a moment to click on the link below, which will bring you to a letter with additional information. A form is provided if you would like to submit your name to be considered for a position or if you would like to nominate someone whom you believe is well qualified. If you would prefer to volunteer in other ways, there will be plenty of opportunities to help plan or staff our many events throughout the school year in all divisions.

Nursery Division

March has been a very busy month for the ND. Our bookfair was an amazing event. It was a day filled with the community coming together for service and fun. We were fortunate to have some devoted upper division students join us as they helped out with the community service project. Thank you to the entire bookfair committee for all of their hard work.

Lower Division

Just as the snow ends, the rain begins. And as the rain soaks our campus, the hint of spring comes into view. A crocus begins its push above the surface. Soon the flower will follow. That’s not to say the winter of endless snow was not well appreciated by our students. They never tired of snow angels and snowmen. Just as they loved playing in the snow, they’re also excited to run around without boots! The season begins to change.

Middle Division

I have had the privilege during the last few weeks to serve on the Search Committee for the new Director of College Counseling at Horace Mann. The conversations and interviews have made me start to think about college and Middle Division students and I look forward to a real conversation with our new director sometime in the next year. Here are some comments about college and middle school students.

Upper Division

It took us until the second week of February to have the first full week of school in 2011. We survived the snow days, we have thawed, we can once again see the green of Clark Field and we have made a smooth transition into the third trimester. Although we had a disrupted start to 2011, we have not missed a beat.

Dorr

The HM Music Outreach club spent the weekend of March 5 and 6th at Dorr. The group's visit included a performance at Brandywine, a nearby senior living home. Here are scenes from the ninth eighth grade program of the year. We concluded this year's eighth grade programs with an overnight on the Appalachian Trail, hiking up Bear Mountain, the tallest mountain in Connecticut. We can tell that spring in near because the trails were muddy and the snow was slushy. The weather at Dorr is warming up, almost all of the snow is gone and it feels like spring today!

Office of Diversity

In 1926, Dr. Carter Woodson, a historian known as the “Father of Black History,” identified the week in February that includes the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass to celebrate Black history. It wasn’t until 1976, the 200th birthday of the United States, that the one-week celebration was extended to include the month of February.
