A Message from Dr. Kelly
What a treat it is for me to lead such a talented faculty and staff at this exciting time of year. With the campus in full bloom, May begins the process of celebrating a year's worth of accomplishments by students, faculty, parents and alumni. From the healthy sense of community captured each day in our classrooms and hallways, on our fields, and in our performance spaces, to the incredible support we receive from parents and alumni alike, ours is a wonderful experience; one filled with the knowledge that we are working together to contribute to making our world better in meaningful ways.

From February 17th to April 6th, our Alumni Class Agents competed in a ‘March Madness’ style competition with the goal of increasing Alumni participation in the Annual Fund! It was a huge success--and we are pleased to announce that the Class of 1996 came out the winner!

In an effort to participate in “choosing local” we are happy to embrace Staten Island Chuck’s message that spring is on its way. With that news in hand, our kindergarten children are heading enthusiastically into animal research. They are exploring habitats around the world and learning about vertebrates.
As the winter and the endless snow, rain, and frigid temperatures came to somewhat of an end, we used our last week prior to Spring Break to celebrate the visual and performing arts that are an integral part of the Lower Division at Horace Mann. Three full evenings, Tuesday, March 16 through Thursday, March 18, of instruments, song, and artwork. Taking it all in was joyous to experience.
Although I get into the Middle Division classrooms frequently to observe teachers and students, it never seems as though it is as often as I wish it could be. This year I set a personal goal to make one hundred walk-throughs, meaning informal visits of five to ten minutes, to try to capture the classroom experience for a Middle Division student.
Book Day is an extrardinary moment in the year, an overflowing of energy and intellectual life at Horace Mann. The Maestro of Book Day, Caroline Bartels, organizes this yearly festival, which included speeches, panel shows, and performances of various sorts.
