Faculty Grants and Fellowships

Questions or comments about any of the programs below can be directed to Adrienne Tanzman, Professional Development Grants Coordinator, at (212) 369-4600 or adrienne_tanzman@horacemann.org.

Curriculum Development Grants
Beyond the curriculum work that takes place beyond the regular, contractual, year, Horace Mann School encourages teachers to develop new curriculum projects during the summer months. All proposals are to include a description of the project’s objectives and anticipated impact on curriculum, the names of those people who will be working on the project, and an indication of the final product. Curriculum Development Grants support innovation. Recipients will be required to share their projects with colleagues.

Study Grants
Horace Mann School supports faculty members in the continuation of their formal education and encourages all teachers to pursue advanced degrees. All faculty members under contract for the upcoming school year are eligible to receive Study Grants, with the exception of Teaching Assistants at the Lower and Nursery Divisions. Grants are intended to support course work toward a degree or certificate and may not be used to maintain residency in a graduate program. In addition, grants are not intended for a course of study unrelated to a faculty member's primary assignment at Horace Mann School. Also, online credits are not acceptable. Proposals for Study Grants are to include a listing of all courses to be taken, name of the educational institution, tuition for each course and total cost.

Faculty Fellowships
As of July 1, 2014, funds previously allocated to Faculty Fellowships have been reallocated to Teacher Initiated Projects. After reviewing several years of available data, the administration believes this shifting of funds to be in the best interest of the greatest number of faculty members in search of professional development opportunities outside of the classroom.

Summer Travel Grants
Summer Travel Grants support travel that enhances the intellectual and personal growth of faculty members. The travel should have a connection to the recipient’s work or may be an exploration of a new area of interest. All full-time faculty members with at least seven years of service at Horace Mann School are eligible to apply for a Travel Grant. Grants are awarded at the discretion of the Grants Committee on the strength of the proposal and proposed itinerary. Recipients are required to share an aspect of what they learned during their time away. This can take the form of a presentation or a contribution to a current unit in the curriculum.

Teacher Initiated Projects
Horace Mann School encourages teachers to initiate short-term or even one-day projects and learning experiences. These projects may not fit into other traditional grant categories and include experiences such as classes that are not part of an advanced degree.

Diversity in the Curriculum Grants
Horace Mann School strives to promote inclusion in all aspects of school life. Faculty members may apply for a Diversity in the Curriculum Grant to incorporate topics and materials into the existing curriculum or to create new units of instruction that help students to develop a deeper understanding of human society’s divergent forms. Faculty members from all divisions and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Recipients may use the summer months to create new activities, choose new readings or materials, and formulate new curricular ideas. Because these grants are for materials and ideas that will be integrated into teaching, recipients should complete their work over the summer or by the end of the first trimester at the latest.
