Riverdale and Kingsbridge

Horace Mann School is a proud member of the Riverdale community in the Bronx.

Horace Mann School hosts events in Van Cortlandt Park in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, including a Halloween Fun Run, events sponsored by Special Olympics, and the All-School Service-Learning Day in the spring. The School tries to patronize local merchants as often as possible to cater events or provide specific services for our programs. Recently, Horace Mann provided new lights on Broadway to make the street brighter and safer. We also work with the Hebrew Home for the Aged: in the event of a power failure, Horace Mann is on call to provide heat, electricity, and hot water at our site to Home residents who can be transported here in an emergency. Horace Mann School hosts dinners, lectures and events for Riverdale residents and local community organizations, including the Hebrew Home  for the Aged, Riverdale Senior Services, Inc., Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy, Community Board 8 and others.

Fieldston

Manhattan College, an independent, Catholic, co-educational college in the Lasallian tradition, is our closest academic neighbor. We share facilities and parking with the College on a reciprocal basis for events. Manhattan College teachers use our swimming pool for classes, and their School of Education sends students to observe classes and to student teach at Horace Mann. We use the Manhattan College gym for two annual events: the annual Coaches Against Cancer game and the Buzzell Games, an annual tradition for 59 years.

Horace Mann School maintains strong relationships with both the other Hilltop Schools (Riverdale Country School and Fieldston School) and neighborhood public, private and parochial schools, nursery through twelve. In supporting other schools, we have donated the use of our facilities and an annual space in our summer day camp program.

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC)

Horace Mann School fosters a close relationship with the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. Located near our school, this facility serves more than 8,000 Bronx residents each year. It is based on a settlement house model, seeking to empower its residents and build a positive sense of community.

HM students volunteer on a weekly basis at the KHCC After-School Program. Upper Division students meet with younger students and with CCVA staff to discuss their experiences, learn about education practice and other issues facing the Kingsbridge children, and plan activities for future visits.
