The Center for Community Values and Action at Horace Mann School was founded in 2006 to promote and strengthen the connections between ethics, education and action at the School and in our wider communities. The Center fulfills its mission by teaching classes, engaging in community action, developing programs, and providing resources. The mission requires both the development of new ideas and innovative strategies as well as the expansion and support of existing programs at the School. All of these activities have the goal of promoting the personal qualities and social contexts that will create caring, socially responsible young people who are aware of their interdependence in the world. To that end, the Center:

  • Promotes awareness that education is about how we live our lives
  • Provides opportunities to put ethical commitments into practice at the School and beyond
  • Serves as a destination for discussing, debating and developing clarity about critical and timely issues involving ethics and values
  • Creates possibilities for discussion, for learning, and for collaborations in the fields of ethics and education
  • Draws on the resources of Horace Mann, including a distinguished and dedicated faculty, committed and energetic students, a professional and caring staff, nurturing and knowledgeable parents, and accomplished and involved alumni

The CCVA is a place to raise tough questions, to try out new ideas and to work together as we build ethical lives and communities. Throughout the year, the CCVA sponsors a wide-variety of programs including:

  • Service-Learning: Ongoing collaborations with community partners to create opportunities for mutual learning and benefit
    • Upper Division Service-Learning Team
    • Administration of the Service-Learning requirement in the Upper Division (9th and 10th grades in 2015-16)
    • Annual All-School Service-Learning Day
    • Service-Learning programs and activities for students of all ages, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, community participants
    • Collaborations with a wide range of organizations, institutions and individuals in our local communities and beyond
  • A speaker series that brings thinkers and activists to Horace Mann to lecture and collaborate on issues in education, ethics and action
  • Workshops and meetings related to ethics theory and practice
  • Opportunities for students to study ethics as part of the academic curriculum
  • A Resource Center that has tools for learning and involvement, including books, periodicals and videos
  • Opportunities for parent involvement, including service-learning, reading groups, planning committees.

One of the highlights of the CCVA’s year is the All-School Service-Learning Day each spring. Hundreds of members of the Horace Mann community work together with our neighbors on a variety of projects at HM and in our wider community.
