For some 4,000 members of the Horace Mann School community HM's Homecoming, on Saturday, October 14, 2017, was a day for celebrating the school. From athletic events throughout the day, to the sprawling tent where students showcased co-curricular and service activities, to the family festival featuring rides and games organized by the Horace Mann School Parents Association, to the fall-themed barbecue Homecoming provided an experience enjoyed by participants of every age and interest. September and the start of a new school year is, for most, the end of summer's idylls—baseball included. But, to those engaged in the sport September is when the season gets started—as teams strive for a playoff spot. As Hall of Famer Willie Stargell once said "I love September, especially when we're in it." This year, Horace Mann School is "in it"—the run-up to the playoff season, that is—with a first ever: two HM alumni in the Major Leagues. This past weekend Pedro Alvarez '05 and Harrison Bader '12 were "called up" – Alvarez to the Baltimore Orioles, and Bader to the St. Louis Cardinals. To read more, click the title link.
It was the bottom of the ninth. The score was tied 2-2, St. Louis Cardinals vs the Colorado Rockies. Horace Mann School alumnus Harrison Bader '12 stepped to the plate as the inning's lead-off batter, and smashed a double into the left-field corner. Advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Greg Garcia, Bader scored the winning run on Jedd Gyorko's short sac fly—short enough for the 41,514 fans at Busch Stadium to see Bader race down the third-base line and slide home for the winning run. Over 10,000 athletes from 80 countries gathered in Israel at the beginning of July 2017 for the 20th Maccabiah Games, an international Olympic-style competition that runs through July 17, 2017. Among these athletes are six members of the Horace Mann School community. HM students Aidan Aisiks '20, Betsey Bennett '19, Charles (Charlie) Wallach '18 and Robert (Robbie) Werdiger '20 are among the 1,126 members of Maccabi Team USA. HM parent Rebecca Stein is competing in Masters Tennis. Roy Salomon '55 was invited by the World Maccabiah Union to be a banner carrier at the opening ceremonies in Jerusalem's Teddy Stadium on July 6, 2017. In an Ivy League Sports website news post on November 17, 2016, Columbia University's ChiChi Ikwuazom HM '16 was named Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year, sharing the honor with a Princeton freshman. According to the Ivy League website, "Ikwuazom leads the League with a .427 hitting percentage and 1.37 blocks per set. The New York, N.Y., native also ranks seventh nationally in hitting percentage and 28th in blocks per set. Ikwuazom is Columbia's first-ever Rookie of the Year honoree—and just its third "of the Year" award winner, joining two-time Defensive Player of the Year Wes."
On October 24th, Columbia University's website celebrated the selection of Chichi Ikwuazom '16 as Ivy League Rookie of the Week. According to ivyleaguesports.com, "Columbia freshman Chichi Ikwuazom (New York, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 12 kills as the Lions dropped a four-set decision at Cornell. The middle blocker hit .348 in the match and also added five blocks and a dig. She paces the Ivy League with a .439 hitting percentage and 1.41 blocks per set. The freshman also entered the weekend ranking among the top 20 nationally in both categories." The Columbia Athletics website added, "Earlier this season, Ikwuazom skied for 11 blocks as part of a three-set victory over Fordham, which tied for the third-most in program history in a single match." As blue skies spread over Horace Mann School's Bronx campus, replacing early morning clouds, first dozens, then hundreds, and then a record-breaking number of nearly 5,000 members of the HM community spread out around Alumni Field and into the school's gyms to watch games and enjoy the festivities of HM's Homecoming on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Inspiring science, encouraging community, promoting wellness and strengthening athletics are the four major goals of Horace Mann School's HM in Motion capital campaign now underway. The campaign was launched on September 15, 2016, at a gathering that brought over 350 members of the Horace Mann School community to the IAC HQ building in Manhattan to learn about the purpose and process of this project from Horace Mann Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly and HM Board of Trustees Chair Michael Colacino '75. Excitement is building up at Horace Mann School where the entire HM community is set to celebrate Homecoming and reunions on Saturday, September 24, 2016. A highlight of the HM school year Homecoming has grown in size and participation over recent years, with over 5,000 people coming to HM's Bronx campus and to class reunions in New York City in 2015, and a similar number expected this year.
