The Web Team(1999-2001)
Nick Faba: Faculty Advisor
Special thanks to Mr. Kenner (The Director of Technology), Ms. Karnes, Mr. Faba, and Ms. Smith (The Computer Department), Phil Radin '98 (the UNIX guru), Brooke Schreier '97,Richard Eisenberg '99,and, of course, Paul Gusmorino '98 (Webmaster Emeritus), who created most of what you see here.
History of the Web Site
The Original Web Site
This website was first designed by Paul Gusmorino (HM '98) in his freshman year at the school, using the shareware program BBEdit. However, the school did not actually acquire a web server until late in his sophmore year, so the fruits of his labors took a while to be noticed. Paul, undaunted, turned his ambition to other matters. He is the president of HMCUG (The Horace Mann Computer Users Group), an actor (in 42nd Street, among other shows), Chair of the Governing Council, systems manager of Student Publications Office, as well as a talented web designer. Check out his home page, complete with a graphic of his spinning head (!!!) at http://www.escape.com/~paulg53.
Generation 2
In the spring and summer of 1997, Brooke Schreier (HM '97) decided to work on fixing up the Horace Mann web site as her senior project. As Webmistress, Brooke totally overhauled the web site; she added frames, a counter, search capability, graphics, and lots and lots of content. After designing dozens of new graphics (using Adobe PhotoShop 3.0.5 and vast numbers of filters), writing huge quantities of HTML (using HotDog Pro 3), uploading the photos (after taking them with a Kodak DC-25 digital camera), and debugging the whole thing (using her over-tired brain), she left HM for the University of Pennsylvania to study something or other, along with several of her classmates at HM. However, she would like to add that she really liked working on this site and would like to thank the entire Computer Department, especially Ms. Karnes, for all their help. Check out Brooke's web page at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/6737/index.html. She was also in in 42nd Street with Paul, and for the second time in two years (the first being in the production of Anything Goes in 1995), she played a character who ends up seducing Paul's character. (Go figure.) In any case, she is a really nice person and says "hi" to all of you who are actually reading this. :-)
Generation 3
In the fall of 1997, Paul Gusmorino (HM '98) redesigned the web site (keeping most of the content from Brooke's version) to have a more polished look and feel, to be easier to use, and to feature various sections of the web site more prominently. He did all the coding in pure HTML, trying to write as efficient and elegant code as possible. He is organizing a Web Team, a group of students who will be involved in maintaining an expanding the web site.
Generation 4
In September, 1998, the reins of the web site were handed over to Charles Donefer (HM '99). Charles is in the process of updating the web site. The pictures at the top of the major pages are his doing. Expect many more changes once Revision 4 is complete.
Generation 5 ( the new and improved team)
The Changes have already begun! In the spring of 1999, a group of 9 students were asked to take charge of the Web Page as the new Web Team. At the start of this year Kelly Gedinsky, Lyndsey Estin, Lara Pinto, Nina Edelman, Caroline Weinberg, Jordan Fasbender , Nina Rendelstein, Rebecca Jones, and Lindsay Sakal, all began the first ever web class. They work together 3 times a rotation on fixing the Horace Mann Web Page, comunicating with alumni and will soon be teaching students and teachers how to work on the web. Feel free to ask any of them questions, or send them your complaints by writing to the Web Team by clicking here :webmaster@horacemann.org -because not only are they your Web Designers but they can be your friends too :)
